We began serving Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau in late May, 2010 and in
June received these comments from County Casework Manager Amber Kalp:

“JusticeWorks has been doing a very good job for us to date. On one specific case they were able to prevent placement of a child who had been adopted through Allegheny County and the placement was disrupting. They were able to get the child registered at the Massanutten Military Academy in Massanutten, Virginia. The child wishes to be a State Trooper so the military academy was an excellent choice.”

JusticeWorks’ Family Resource Specialist Emily Drury and our Westmoreland Assistant Director Carrie Airhart were instrumental in guiding this challenging case and we’re pleased their efforts achieved a quick positive outcome. And thank you Ms. Kalp for partnering with us and for your kind remarks.

We will be opening offices and hiring local staff in Greensburg and Washington, PA. Children & Youth Agency Directors in both counties cited our outstanding outcomes, dedication to our families and stakeholders, and the positive comments by our current County partners as reason for their choosing JusticeWorks.

We are honored by their trust in us and pledge to do whatever it takes to build better futures for youth, families and Westmoreland and Washington Counties. We anticipate initiating services in late May, 2010.

Family Resource Specialist Jessica Fritz received a referral for a STOPP case on 3/12/10 at 1:45pm. As a new employee, Jessica asked Amy Carr to assist her. Jessica, Amy, and the Lehigh case worker met at the county building at 2:30pm and walked to the family’s apartment for the initial visit and introduction of the services.

*JWYC Client’s names are changed for privacy purposes.

While visiting with the mother and Jonathan (35 day old premie) our staff noticed that the mother was having a difficult time quieting the baby who was crying. Amy held Jonathan and tried to console him. While Amy was holding Jonathan she saw his eyes roll back into his head, stop breathing and go limp and lifeless.
The county caseworker also noticed the baby’s distress. Amy was able to get Jonathan alert and moving again within seconds, however his difficulties soon reoccurred. Amy urged the case worker to call 911 immediately and request emergency service. The case worker then held Jonathan and the same problem persisted.

The case worker then gave Jonathan to Jessica to hold. Jessica had several experiences of Jonathan rolling his eyes back in to his head, going limp and turning purple. Fortunately, Jessica had prior experience with premature babies who have breathing problems. She was able to keep Jonathan in a position that allowed him to breath and stay alert. The ambulance arrived in 15 minutes and took Jonathan to Lehigh Valley Hospital where was examined and admitted overnight.

Jessica and Amy met the family at the hospital and described the encounter to the doctors who were examining Jonathan. The doctor’s said the baby would surely have died if not for the prompt intervention.

Jessica stayed with baby Jonathan through x-rays and a MRI until 11:30pm when he was formally admitted. Jonathan’s mother left at 7pm while Jessica stayed. The mother was overwhelmed and somewhat confused about what had transpired.

We are very happy that the hospital was able to restore Jonathan’s breathing and, after 6 days, he has returned home subject to close monitoring of his Mom. We appreciate the continued participation and assistance from the county caseworker. We will continue to stay closely involved with the family.

Our deep appreciation to Amy, Jessica and LOCYS for their extraordinary measures

While Daphne was in placement at Abraxas LDP, Sean became involved with the family due to concerns with her brother at home. Following the completion of services for her brother, JWYC was referred to Daphne for assistance with transitioning her home. Daphne was initially placed approximately five months earlier for delinquent behavior : marijuana use, truancy, parent-child conflict. Sean began to meet with Daphne while in placement to provide counseling and develop a plan upon return home. She was seventeen and obtained her GED while in placement. Sean began to supervise home visits a month prior to her being released.

Sean assisted the mother in developing house rules that was appropriate for her, since she was seventeen and no longer attended school. Since her return home during these visits changed the current home dynamics, Sean would intervene and resolve conflicts while improving communication. Though Daphne showed significant improvement during these visits, she violated several major rules during her last visit before discharge. Sean responded to a crisis call from her mother who stated that Daphne and her fourteen year old sister left the house during the night and used alcohol. Police were contacted as well as the LDP staff. Sean provided crisis management to the family resulting in Daphne being transported back to LDP that morning. It was determined that she would not be discharge, rather transferred to another facility.

Though no discharged date was given, Sean provided independent skills training and job searching for client while in placement. Due to her strong dislike of her new facility, she became more compliant with Sean and involved in completing her goals. While she was in placement, Sean found her a job at Rutter’s Gas Station in York. After working with her mother and her in improving their communication, Daphne was discharged home to start her new job. After several weeks of being home, she continued to work 35-40hrs a week. Sean assisted her arranging and transporting her to several admission meetings at York Technical Institute. Her entrance into the “adult world” gave her strong insight and maturity, relieving her of her old behavior.

Thank you to Sean Lazarus, York County JusticeWorks for doing whatever it takes to achieve a positive outcome!

It was well written and I especially like how the other children in the home are not mentioned.

Hello Renee,

I just wanted to take the time and express my thanks for the work Amy Carr has done on the Tyler case. This could have been a difficult transition home with all three children returning in a short period of time, but with Amy’s guidance and knowledge the children and Dorothy have transitioned well. Amy has been on top with having Dorothy attend or being aware of the Carson Valley intake and in-home appointments too. If you have a caseworker of the month, I strongly suggest Amy be the caseworker for December!

Thanks,

Take a look at the following letter forwarded to us by Renee Kresge from Lehigh County.

“Dear Ms. Kresge,

I am writing to compliment a member of your staff, Karen Votta, whom I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know over the past ten months. My daughter Megan, was referred for services by Lehigh County Children and Youth Services in October of last year. Her life had taken a considerable turn for the worse after she ran away from home the preceding year. Following an arrest for alcohol possession by a minor she was placed in foster care. When Karen became involved, it was her efforts that initiated contact with me and led to the eventual reconciliation for Megan, my son, and I.

Megan had become very withdrawn from her family; relying on relationships with drug users and similarly disaffected youths. She had stopped attending school and her entire world revolved around the “party”. Karen’s no nonsense approach with Megan was instrumental in helping me confront her misconceptions about life, family, school, and lead her back on course. By keeping her connected with Karen rather than just returning her to my home, Karen and I together were able to lead Megan to effect wholesale changes in her self perception. This was critical if we were going to help her understand her own value in order that she motivate herself to seek more than an “eeking out” of a meager existence.

Today Megan remains clean and sober. Although I expect there will be some hiccoughs along the way, she is certainly pointed in the right direction. She attends Parkland High School where she worked out a 3.5 grade average in the final four months of last year. She is enrolled in College Prep level classes, and wants to qualify for honors next year. Her academic drive has returned, and her sights are set on attending college for nursing.

I spent the better part of two years at the end of that proverbial rope; I had no idea how to get through to Megan and often felt my heart would break from the pain of watching her die. If not for JusticeWorks, and in particular Karen Votta, I don’t believe Megan would be doing well right now. Know that my family and I will be forever grateful for this intervention; JusticeWorks will always be remembered by us, and Karen Votta will always be loved for her dedication, professionalism, and downright good sense in dealing with Megan and my family. Please extend my heartfelt gratitude to your entire team and know that you have a truly remarkable and gifted employee in Karen.

Thank you and best regards,

Richard O’toole”

Thanks to Karen Votta, Lehigh County JusticeWorks for doing whatever it takes to achieve a positive outcome!

Please take a look at the following letter sent to us by Kerri Conley, CYS Supervisor from York County.

“I usually don’t write e-mails to give you updates on positive events only on negative ones. I wanted to take the time today to give you some positive feedback. I have three cases with Josh Lauzus (G****, Y***, and W***). I wanted you to know that I feel he has been doing an excellent job with all three families.

The feedback from the workers has been positive. His contacts are detailed and on time. I know that my caseworker Rachael Carey and Josh have been busting their backs on the G*** case trying to maintain the cleanliness in the home. I know that he was with Jennah Kosmicki when they drove all the way down to Delta in search of C*** W*** while he was on-run. They were successful in finding him but then he was high and the whole ordeal lasted all night with getting to the hospital and waiting. Josh has also found a way to make Ms. Y*** semi-compliant (which is nearly impossible). She was unsuccessfully discharge from team services before but somehow Josh gets her to follow through. I just wanted you to be aware that he is doing a very good job and I am happy with the services he provides. Thank you.”

Kerri Conley, CYS Supervisor
York County Office of Children & Youth Services

Thanks to Josh Lauzus, York County JusticeWorks for doing whatever it takes to achieve a positive outcome!

On August 27th, the Pittsburgh Business Times held their annual celebration of Pittsburgh’s 100 fastest growing companies.

JusticeWorks YouthCare was cited as number 29!

JusticeWorks’ CEO, Dan Heit commented that “while growing a company is exciting and fulfilling, in our industry it is always a little bittersweet since it reflects the profound need and distress in families and communities”.

We are heartened though that our existing public sector partners see the value in our services and our ability to achieve positive outcomes with very challenging youth and families. Our programs have proven to save more money than they cost.

Even during these terrible economic times, we’ve seen increased utilization of our existing programs, new services added in existing counties, and new counties who have chosen to contract with JusticeWorks.

And, we know that our good outcomes and continued growth would not be possible without the hard work of our expert staff who are committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve success with the youth and families entrusted to our care.

Chelsea has a history of multiple foster placements, and moved between her two parents, for many of her 8 years. Her mother has ongoing drug and alcohol issues, with the most recent episode involving an inpatient admission followed by a stay in a halfway home. 60-day STOPP intervention was implemented, followed by JustCare Intensive services, to assist Chelsea’s adult sister and her partner to move home and assume all responsibilities relating to the care and needs of Chelsea.

Chelsea’s sister was glad for the opportunity to keep Chelsea out of another foster placement, and was open to JusticeWorks services, utilizing this worker very well. She called us a “team” because she knew I was working diligently with her to do what had to be done prior to the court date in which the child would be probably be placed if we did not meet all the requirements.

Together, we got Chelsea to all her weekly mental health appointments, ended the school truancy issues, implemented more household structure and rules, got the child off her pacifier, and maintained her significant medication regimen. With the help of the LCOCYS caseworker, we resolved difficult issues with DPW and Medical Assistance, and successfully navigated the Kinship Caregiver application process.

The little family moved into their own apartment and have become independent of their mother, who left the halfway home early, returned to the original family home, and to her previous drug and alcohol use. The adult sister strikes a balance in the family dynamic, supervising weekly visits between the child and their mother, who abides by the established ground rules and knows that to be allowed to visit with the child, she must be clean and sober that day.

It has been a pleasure to assist this family in establishing themselves and helping them to keep Chelsea out of foster care, and with family who loves her and who can keep her safe.

Thanks again to Karen Votta, Lehigh County JusticeWorks for doing whatever it takes to achieve a positive outcome!

Adam's mother and grandmother were heavily involved in the use of alcohol, crack and cocaine which caused much damage in the household, including loss of jobs, financial instability, incarcerations, and near homelessness.

Adam’s mother and grandmother were heavily involved in the use of alcohol, crack and cocaine which caused much damage in the household, including loss of jobs, financial instability, incarcerations, and near homelessness. Addictions and mental health issues were present in the extended family system which resulted in a constantly chaotic and unstable environment for the small child.

Adam’s mother started and quit numerous treatments including in-patient, partial hospitalization and out-patient settings, always excusing herself for reasons she told herself were sensible, but in reality were designed to allow her to return to drug use. Adam’s grandmother refused to embrace any treatment. The situation appeared to be moving towards placement of the child, when circumstances occurred which caused the grandmother to move out of the family home. This event started a chain reaction in the mother’s life which ultimately cleared the way for the child’s mother to begin to get clean and sober.

Adam’s mother began to maintain her mental health and D&A treatment services. She accepted and embraced the services of this provider who constantly offered unconditional positive regard balanced with reality therapy using a confrontational approach.

She began to really focus on and care for her son, obtained a new job, started saving money, began a budget to pay back old debts, and saved her relationship with her boyfriend. Her attendance at NA meetings worked wonders in combination with her other services, which she finally realized were giving her a drug-free future which she previously could not imagine. She managed to keep extended family members rallying around her to keep the child in the home.

STOPP and JustCare intervention over a period of 8 months was a major contributor in the process of helping this family achieve stability and safety within the family home, preventing a placement, and helping them establish a solid start towards a bright and drug-free future.

Thank you to Karen Votta, Lehigh County JusticeWorks for doing whatever it takes to achieve a positive outcome!

On July 26, 2009 JusticeWorks celebrated its 10th anniversary with an all-staff picnic outside of Reading.

About 150 staff, spouses and children enjoyed a picnic Bar B-Q, water slide, horseshoes, volleyball, carnival games and a dunk tank.

JusticeWorks’ CEO, Dan Heit & Vice President Operations Nicole Allen took the plunge in the dunk tank to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Amazingly, staff lined up and generously contributed to dunk Dan & Nicole! JusticeWorks is matching the staff contribution to Make-A-Wish.

In comments to staff, Dan recalled starting JusticeWorks with the idea to improve outcomes for juvenile courts and child welfare agencies through innovative and proactive programs. He acknowledged that a good idea is not nearly enough in human services.. it takes the hard work, dedication and commitment by staff to do whatever it takes to truly build better futures for youth, families and communities. And, JusticeWorks is blessed with a staff who do just that!

Starting with one contract with Lehigh County Juvenile Probation Office and 2 employees, JusticeWorks now provides a range of services in seven counties throughout Pennsylvania with a staff of some 100 outstanding professionals.

The report card above demonstrates that JusticeWorks is succeeding in its mission to collaborate with public agencies to achieve better outcomes for youth and families.
